Abstract：Two large container ships, MSC NAPOLI and MOL COMFORT, suffered catastrophic failures in 2007 and 2013, respectively. Following these accidents, thorough investigations were conducted to reveal the root causes of the failures. As a result, some new findings were obtained, but there still remain many unknown issues to be investigated further. This lecture focuses on overview of the accidents, structural characteristics and important design points of large container ships, and touches upon some new findings from the up-to-the-minute studies dealing with hydrodynamic and structural numerical simulations and full scale measurement of large container ships.
Biography: Prof. Tetsuo Okada’s current position is Professor, Faculty of Engineering, Yokohama National University, Japan. He used to work for Japan Marine United Corporation until 2014, and engaged in many ship and offshore projects, including large post-panamax container ships, LNG carriers, FSO/FPSO’s and FLNG’s. His current research field ranges from rational structural design methodologies, whipping responses and ultimate strength of large container ships, to hull condition monitoring. He has been serving as a member of International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress, and held the chairmanship of the Committee “Materials and Fabrication Technology” for the term of 2009. Now, He is associate editor of Journal of Marine Science and Technology and editorial board of Journal of Marine Structures.
