Abstract:In the design and the construction of ships and offshore structures, there are a lot of uncertainties in the shape of the structures (welding deformation, effect of misalignment, corrosion wastage). In this lecture, recent study of uncertainty quantification method developed by the lecturer is introduced. Especially, the lecture focuses on the new method for solution of uncertainty of structural response for the case that there are uncertainties in the shape of the structure. The method uses an Hermite polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) to represent the uncertainty of shapes and the response surface. The proposed method involves a mathematical formulation which is a natural extension of the deterministic finite element concept to the space of random variables.

Biography: Prof. Yasumi Kawamura graduated from University of Tokyo in 1989, and got doctoral degree (Doctor of Engineering) from University of Tokyo in 1994. After that, he became a lecture in Yokohama National University, Japan. Now he is a professor, and is also a head of the division of Systems Design for Ocean-Space in the Graduate School of Engineering, Yokohama National University. His current research fields are structural mechanics, computer aided engineering, strength of ship structures, structural reliability and uncertainty analysis. Now he is a member the committee II.1, Quasi-static Response, of ISSC (International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress).
